Spar is targeting alfreso dining with the launch of an own label summertime range and revamps across salads and meats.

Spar brand’s summertime range launches in April and is claimed to be worth a targeted £5.5m in sales, focusing on the trend for barbecues, picnics and alfresco dining.

The range includes cooked chicken, pizza, dips, prepared salads, BBQ meats, continental meats, anti-pasti and food-to-go.

With three Bank Holidays and four major sporting events this year, Spar retailers have a fantastic opportunity to drive sales with the range, the company says.

Susan Darbyshire, Spar UK brand director, said: “Our ambition for Spar brand is to be recognised as having the best range in convenience, to be seen as modern, relevant, good value, great quality and be nutritionally balanced.

“The Spar brand summertime range will help us do this, as it consists of great value products that customers buy frequently.

“This means our retailers are able to stock key lines across all of the summer categories to ensure there is a breadth of choice for shoppers who want to indulge in some alfresco eating, with popular flavours and good value,” she said.

“With multiple bank holidays, sporting events and warmer weather on the horizon, we are supporting our Spar retailers to make their stores a real destination for all things summer.”

Spar has also updated its range of salads, dips and vegetables.

It is introducing a Tzatziki dip. Tzatziki is growing faster than the total dip offering and this line is an ideal accompaniment for kebabs, falafel and salads, Spar said.

This line joins the rest of the own brand dips range, which has been refreshed with a new, updated look and feel and are all price-marked at two for £2.00.

Spar also has a range of Bagged and Bowl Salads, said to be perfect for barbecues and summer outdoor dining. Bowl salads turnover £7,000+ each week for Spar and remain the ultimate convenience, as they are quick and easy for customers who don’t have time or don’t want to buy all the individual ingredients.

The Spar brand offer includes a range of top selling salad lines as well as salad dressings and croutons too. Two new lines will be added to the Salad Bowls range: Spar Baby leaf 90g (PMP £1) and Spar Classic salad bowl 320g (PMP £2.00).

Best-selling lines Coleslaw, Houmous, Mixed Olives with Chilli and Sweet and Crunchy Salad are key summer lines customers so Spar is driving the distribution of these lines through its Bestsellers campaign.

Darbyshire said: “We are encouraging our retailers to stock up on these great SPAR Brand summertime salad lines, to inspire shoppers with our delicious summer range.

“We are confident that we are tapping into the latest trends in convenience with these products – bowl salads, for example, are the ultimate convenience, as they’re so quick and easy for shoppers who don’t want to buy individual ingredients,” she added.

In a third piece of NPD, Spar is introducing and highlighting a range of  meat lines, to help inspire shoppers getting set for barbecues and alfresco dining this summer.

New to the Spar brand summer offering this year is Beef Pastrami (PMP £2.00), which can be used in sandwiches and to add flavour to other meals.

Beef is growing faster than the total cooked meats category with 4% volume growth driven mainly by increased Shoppers. It is gaining popularity linked with the continuing British love of American food

Also new this summer are two cooked chicken lines: Spar Roast Chicken Breast Fillets (PMP £3.00 and Spar Cooked Chicken Thighs (two for £5.00). These lines tap the trend for high protein and these lines are ready to eat for convenience.

Set to appeal to shoppers dining alfresco this summer is the Spar brand range of slow cooked meats. These lines are performing well with a turnover of £28,000 per week. BBQ Pulled Pork and BBQ Ribs in a Glaze (PMP £3.50) are ideal for summer and add interest to traditional BBQ meats such as burgers and sausages.

Darbyshire said: “We know that half of adults who eat BBQ food would like more ideas for interesting dishes.

“With our marinated meats range, we can inspire Spar customers to try out traditional, smoky sweet BBQ flavours as well as more modern tastes, like Piri Piri and Chinese.

“Our retailers are in the best place to stock up on all these lines now well ahead of the summer, to take advantage of the holiday season and drive sales in the coming months,” she said.
