Angling Direct gives away free Whip Poles to under-16s in bid to increase number of UK anglers


Angling Direct, the UK’s largest and fastest growing fishing tackle and equipment retailer, is delighted to report that, as part of its initiative to attract more anglers to the sport, it gave away 8,248 free whip poles in 2019 to children and teenagers under the age of 16.

The fishing retailer is passionate about the future of angling and supports the view that there are significant benefits to spending time out in the countryside on the bank. This, combined with the increasing concern that today’s younger generation is glued to mobile and computer screens, inspired Angling Direct to equip under 16s with the basic resources needed to get them outside on the bank and engaged with angling.

Throughout 2019 Angling Direct ran several campaigns designed to encourage younger generations to give angling a go. In July, Angling Direct ran a promotion offering a free Garbolino whip to under-16 anglers when they spent £5 in store. The scheme was an immense success and resulted in Angling Direct giving away 6,606 poles to the next generation of anglers. 

Following the success of the July summer scheme, Angling Direct ran another promotion during the October half term by offering one Garbolino Telefloat 158 Margin Pole (3m or 4m), one pole rig and one bag of Fjuka bait, which was secured as part of the deal by working in conjunction with Dave Preston, founder of Preston Innovations. Similarly, this relied on spending just £5 in store and, in return, under-16s were provided with everything that they needed to go fishing the very same day. The promotion proved popular once again, with 1,027 whips given away during the half term period. 

To conclude a successful year of attracting the next generation of anglers, Angling Direct ran another offer over the Christmas holidays, offering both Garbolino and Zebco whips to under-16s. The uptake was encouraging, with a further 615 whips being given away courtesy of Angling Direct.

Angling Direct remains committed to leading the industry by encouraging the next generation into angling and this year the fishing retailer will be running similar campaigns during the school holidays.
