Arabic challenger to houmous launched in UK


Cuzena – ‘kitchen’ in Moroccan – is challenging houmous’ 20-year stranglehold on the UK’s savoury spreads and dip market with a unique range of ‘madamous’ dips.

Described as the ‘spicy cousins of houmous’, the three premium fava (broad) bean dips are based on ones which have been part of the staple diet in Middle Eastern countries for over 5,000 years. They’re the first to launch in the UK.

Naturally healthy, each vegan dip is high in protein and fibre, vitamins A and C, potassium and iron – but low in calories (75% less than houmous), fat and salt. They’re also gluten-free.

Unlike houmous, madamous is a dish that can be enjoyed both cold and hot – a versatility which makes it perfect not just as a dip or sandwich filling, but as a topping for jacket potatoes and sauce for stews, curries, pasta and couscous.

Made with British fava beans, each dip is cooked with onions, garlic, tomatoes and coriander – complemented with a unique combination of Moroccan spices and chilli. The three flavours are: Garlic & Coriander, Fiery Chilli and Caramelised Onion.

Cuzena was set-up by Shadia Al Hili, a Mancunian entrepreneur with Moroccan and Yemeni parentage. This has given her a unique insight into which Arabic flavours can appeal to British tastes. She said: “Our dips are examples of classic Arabian cooking – simple, flavoursome food that is not only delicious, but healthy. That ticks lots of boxes for today’s consumer, especially as they’re also perfect for a free-from or vegan diet. We estimate over 75% of Brits are dip buyers, so the opportunity for these challengers to houmous and salsa is significant. They’re also just the start of our mission to introduce the UK to ‘undiscovered’ flavours and foods from the Middle East.” 

Already stocked in Wholefoods, a variety of independents and regional branches of SPAR, the brand’s new distributor Cotswold Fayre is further boosting distribution across grocery, HORECA and food service.
