Employees from across Blakemore Foodservice, Wakefield, have spread some Christmas cheer and donated a cheque for £2,000 to a children’s cancer charity in Leeds.
Staff nominated Candlelighters as their charity of the year and have organised a number of fundraising initiatives throughout the year including a 15 mile kayak down the Aire and Calder Navigation Canal, barbeque, darts competition and raffles.
Candlelighters was formed in 1976 and is a charity formed and run by parents of children who have or have had cancer, ex-patients and the medical staff who treat them. Based in Yorkshire, Candlelighters provide essential services and support to children with cancer and their families.
AF Blakemore’s charitable fund, the Blakemore Foundation, which donates 2% of the company’s pre-tax profits to good causes each year, match funded the depot’s fundraising efforts.
Mark Flynn, Blakemore Foodservice general manager said: “We try to think of a different event every three months for the great charity, some challenging and some quite easy to organise. The Kayak was our biggest challenge as none of us had ever done it before as it was quite scary on the canal facing the wind and rain.
“Candlelighters provide financial and emotional support to around 150 families fighting cancer per year in Yorkshire. It breaks my heart to visit but it also gives me and my team such a proud but emotional moment to see the children’s smiling faces under such circumstances.
“The Wakefield staff have asked to support this charity again through 2014.”
Eve Corry, Candlelighters’ community fundraiser said: “We are delighted to receive this donation from Blakemore Foodservice from their 2013 fundraising events.
“We provide holidays to patients on treatment and their families and £2,000 will fund at least four families to take a well needed break to the seaside on the east coast or to Center Parcs. We are also thrilled to hear that Candlelighters is their chosen charity for 2014.”
