CJ LANG & Son, the long-established Dundee-based independent food and drink wholesaler, has been named the Best Licensed Wholesaler (Off Trade) at the Scottish Wholesale Achievers awards.

Still a family-owned business, CJ Lang owns 108 Spar stores across Scotland and supplies 189 independent Spar outlets north of the border. It fended off stiff competition from businesses all over the country to win the sought-after Best Licensed Wholesaler (Off-Trade) accolade, sponsored by Currie’s.

The company was also runner-up in the Best Retail Wholesaler (Delivered) and Highly Commended in the Best Retail Development Programme category at Achievers. The awards, now in their 10th year, were created and organised by the Scottish Wholesale Association to recognise professionalism and excellence across all sectors of the wholesale industry in Scotland.

Some 500 people attended the gala dinner and awards presentation, hosted by BBC Scotland TV presenter Catriona Shearer at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh on 9 February 2012.

Mike Leonard, CJ Lang trading controller, said: “In our business, it’s all about working in partnership with your customers and we spend a great deal of time asking Spar retailers what they want and, crucially, coming up with innovative solutions to help them remain competitive and grow their businesses.

“These awards also recognises the strength of the Spar name in Scotland and send out a message to our competitors that we are very much at the forefront of our industry, setting the highest possible standards and working with our customers to ensure Spar is the first-choice convenience store for communities the length and breadth of Scotland.”

The judges praised CJ Lang’s “commitment to working with local suppliers which has given the stores it services a real local feel” and also highlighted its “exceptional in-house training, especially for field sales representatives, which has kept this business delivering first-class support to all its customers”.

Kate Salmon, executive director of the Edinburgh-based Scottish Wholesale Association, said: “CJ Lang is an outstanding wholesaler that has consistently raised the bar in terms of innovation and customer service. It is this type of professionalism and commitment that is helping our industry thrive and prosper.”
