Co-operative: cracking egg

The Co-operative’s Fairtrade Easter egg has topped a taste test on Channel 4’s food website, beating other Easter eggs retailing at up to £55.

The Co-operative Truly Irresistible Fairtrade Milk Chocolate & Butterscotch Half Egg with Mini Eggs, which retails for £10, beat eggs from Harrods, Godiva, Hotel Chocolat, Waitrose and Green & Blacks.

The Co-operative’s premium product is made from Fairtrade chocolate, embedded with crunchy pieces of butterscotch. Inside, there are a selection of mini eggs including eggs with caramelised hazelnuts, milk chocolate with chocolate brownie, and white chocolate with chopped cherry.

Testers for the website said the egg was “nice and creamy with a good thickness” and also it was “the best milk chocolate we’ve tried”.

Kate Jones, who heads up own-brand products for The Co-operative Food, said: “We’re thrilled that our egg has beaten these other big hitters. It’s a great product, which is available at the majority of our 3,000 food stores nationwide.

“A win like this really strengthens our ‘great food within easy reach’ message, especially as the egg itself is made of Fairtrade chocolate, which guarantees a fair price and a better life for the cocoa growers.”
