Greggs has launched its new hot dog, which, following a trip over the pond has gained the ultimate seal of approval from one of the street food capitals of the world, New York.
Armed with several hundred hot dogs and freshly baked sub rolls, Greggs made the trip across the Atlantic to the ‘Big Apple’. The ‘dogs’ were given a tour of a number of famous landmarks from Times Square to the Statue of Liberty before being given to everyday New Yorkers to sample for their expert view.
After a day of tasting from a limited edition Greggs street food cart in Manhattan, Greggs’ hot dog was given the New York seal of approval, paving the way for it to be sold in nearly 1,700 Greggs shops across the UK.
Malcolm Copland, commercial director of Greggs, said: “Our product development team have been working hard to perfect the hot dog recipe. To ensure the product was 100% authentic we decided to give it the ultimate test by giving street food-loving New Yorkers, who know their hot dogs better than anyone, the opportunity to be the first to taste test them.
“The feedback was outstanding, New Yorkers seem to love our version of the iconic on-the-go snack and we can’t wait for the UK public to have their first taste too.”
Curio Curtis, of New York said: “I’ve been eating hot dogs for years and I can honestly say Greggs have nailed it. I would love for them to open a shop here in Manhattan selling hot dogs and some of their pasties I have heard so much about.”
The Greggs Hot Dog is made from pork sourced from farms with more than 125 years heritage. It is smoked over natural beechwood to give a fuller flavour before being served in a sub roll and topped with a choice of ketchup, mustard and crispy onions. The Hot Dog is available from £2.50 and is available in Greggs shops nationwide.
To celebrate the launch, Greggs is also offering a once in a lifetime trip to New York for one lucky customer. To enter, buy a Greggs Hot Dog, take a selfie with it and tweet it to @GreggstheBakers using #HotDogsOnTour.
