Leicester based pie-makers, Walker & Son, is celebrating one of its most successful years to date.
Throughout 2015, over 25 national industry accolades, including the Grocer Food & Drink Awards and Great Taste Awards, have been collected by the prestigious pie-makers, Walker & Son, for its acclaimed pies.
The end-of-year celebration follows a fantastic result for the pie-makers at this year’s annual Melton & Belvoir Agricultural Society Show (8 December 2015). The pie perfectionist took home 10 prizes, including first place in all of the show’s pie and pastry classes, at the event that commemorates the best of England’s produce.
Several awards were given for Walker & Son’s classic Pork Pies – widely recognised by their iconic union jack wrapping – which are made using the same recipe since the company started in1824. Their speciality pies also shared a slice of the awards action. One shining example was its popular Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie picking up Gold at the British Pie Awards. It was also crowned ‘Britain’s Best Pie’ in the Daily Star’s ‘Pie-Off’ this autumn.
Walker & Son has been supplying Leicestershire and the Midlands with pies for over 190 years. Walkers’ also produces hot pies and pork pies, sold in supermarket aisles and deli counters across the UK.
The celebration was held in Walkers’ flagship store in Leicester. Commenting on the awards, master pie-maker Ian Heircock, said: “Our pies are without doubt the best pies in the country and of course I can say that because I’ve been lovingly making them for Walker & Son for the last 38 years.
“I’m thrilled that we cleaned up at this year’s Melton & Belvoir Agricultural Show – it was very competitive with entries from across the country. We are proud and passionate about our pies and are thrilled to be celebrating another successful year of awards.”
Walkers is owned by food manufacturer Samworth Brothers, which has itself won over 400 awards in the last five years for its pies.
Other businesses within the Samworth Group helping them achieve these accolades include Dickinson & Morris and Ginsters. The businesses also make a number of premium own-label products for retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Tesco Finest.
