Nampak Plastics, the UK’s leading manufacturer of HDPE milk bottles, has scooped two top awards this month for its commitment to the environment. The company behind the Infini lightweight milk bottle was awarded a Gold Star by National Recycling Stars as well as the Sustainable Product Development of the Year Award at the CIWM Environmental Excellence Awards 2012.

National Recycling Stars chose Nampak for its top tier accolade after it demonstrated on-going commitment to increasing the amount of waste it recycles as well as improving the environmental awareness of its staff.

Nampak also won the Sustainable Product Development of the Year Award for the Infini bottle at the CIWM Awards for Environmental Excellence, after competing against a wide range of companies across the industrial spectrum. Now in its sixth year, the CIWM Awards recognise and reward best practice in the sustainable management of waste and resources and reduction of environmental impact.

Eric Collins, managing director of Nampak Plastics, said: “We are thrilled with these latest awards and feel it is a real credit to the level of commitment Nampak has invested into research and development to remain a sustainable organisation.

“Helping to reduce the environmental impact of packaging is something that everyone throughout the supply chain has a responsibility for. At Nampak we are doing our bit to help reduce the impact of milk bottles and ensure the minimum goes to landfill.”

Earlier this year, Nampak launched its next generation Infini bottle that contains up to 25% less plastic than the standard design and uses up to 15% recycled material. The reduced weight of the bottles has resulted in a decrease of 15,000 tonnes worth of material outputted by the company, and has led to a carbon emissions reduction of 34,000 tonnes. Over 45m Infini bottles have already been manufactured and Nampak expects production to reach 100m by the end of 2012. Nampak is currently conducting trials that could result in the use of 30% recycled material used in their bottles in the near future.

Infini has previously achieved a number of other industry accolades including the 2012 International Dairy Innovation Awards for Best Dairy Packaging Innovation, and Starpack Award for Excellence.
