UK retailers are being given a unique chance to meet compliance schemes from across Europe, to find out about current producer responsibility legislation, and upcoming changes which may affect their business activities.

Valpak’s ‘Meet the Compliance Schemes’ is free of charge, and takes place in London, on 21 June. Compliance schemes from across Europe will provide detailed insight into current legislation and upcoming changes in their countries, including the UK. Delegates will be invited to meet the schemes face to face, network and meet mutual customers.

The event is aimed at companies which import or sell products in the UK, or which operate overseas via online retail, physical stores or with overseas customers.

Those attending will gain a clear understanding of producer responsibility across Europe, knowledge about their own obligations, and updates from compliance organisations on UK & European legislative landscapes.

Becky Thomas of Valpak said: “Managing compliance requirements across multiple countries can be complicated and time-consuming. This is a rare opportunity for a face to face discussion with our overseas partners. Businesses will be able to ask questions, find out about how legislation is changing, and network with others who face the same challenges.”

Producer responsibility legislation was developed to ensure that producers of packaging and goods contribute to the recycling of the materials they place on the market. It helps to minimise the environmental impact of waste, and is a serious obligation. Each country has its own legislation, thresholds for compliance and obligated materials. For example, some countries include furniture and textiles in producer responsibility legislation, while others hold businesses responsible for the first item they place on the market.

In the UK, businesses are obligated under the Packaging Regulations if they have a turnover of more than £2 million, and place over 50 tonnes of packaging on the market. There is also legislation for waste electrical and electronic goods (WEEE) and batteries. Across Europe, systems vary enormously.
