Two Spar stores scooped top prizes in the Convenience Retail Awards, organised by trade magazines Convenience Store and The Grocer.

The Village Stores in Walthamstow Village, trading under the Spar fascia, was named Convenience Retailer of the Year and Spar Pike Hill in Burnley was named Best Multiple Store of the Year.

The Village Stores impressed the judging panel with its exciting range, high retail standards, and genuine points of difference – including an in-store pizzeria – that help it stand out in a retail sector increasingly dominated by the same brand names and similar in-store environment.

Spar Pike Hill took the Best Multiple Store title for high standards and great product range, particularly in impulse items, hot food to go – including a range of healthy options – and walk-in beer and wine chiller.

The store also impressed the judges with the tremendous dedication and enthusiasm of the manager and the staff, with a community notice board, involvement in local events, and the appointment of an in-store community champion. Despite the opening of a new Tesco nearby, the store has enjoyed a big uplift in sales year-on-year.
