Spar claims it has helped National Lottery operator Camelot achieve its best-ever annual sales performance.
In the year to 31 March 2011 Camelot grew total sales, including those from Spar stores, to over £5.8bn, up 6.8% year-on-year. Total National Lottery sales have increased by over 20% since 2002 and the number of players has risen by over 5% in the last five years.
The record performance enabled Camelot to deliver over £1.6bn to good causes in 2010/11, an increase of 7.5% on the previous year, and pay out over £2.8bn in prizes to players, bringing the total number of lottery millionaires created since launch to over 2,600. Retailers and players, including Spar and its customers, have now helped to raise over £26bn for good causes, money that has funded over 350,000 individual lottery awards across the UK.
Spar said it has played a key role in The National Lottery’s continued success. It achieved lottery sales of £262.6m in 2010/11, representing a year-on-year sales increase of 6.9%. As a result, the business generated over £73m for good causes.
Barry Wallis, retail development controller at Spar UK, said: “We have had a great year with Camelot – and it’s all been down to the hard work of our staff getting fully behind The National Lottery in-store. All of the games have been popular but EuroMillions, Thunderball and Scratchcards have been the main drivers for sales.”
Duncan Malyon, sales director at Camelot, said: “Retail remains our largest sales channel – accounting for around 85% of all sales – and Spar and our other retail partners remain pivotal to The National Lottery’s ongoing success story.
“Our business is all about raising as much money as possible for good causes and creating millions of winners – and, thanks to the tremendous efforts of retailers like Spar, this year’s figures clearly show we’re doing just that.
“Our outstanding performance in 2010/11 has consolidated our position as one of the world’s leading lottery operators – and ensured the UK National Lottery remains one of the most consistently-successful and socially-responsible operations of its kind. But this achievement is only possible because of the continued passion, dedication and vigilance of Spar and other retailers.
“We are not complacent though – we want to work with Spar and others to build on last year’s exceptional performance. We have exciting plans for the coming year, including a host of new games and sales initiatives, and will be challenging all of our retail partners for even better in-store execution. By focusing on these plans, I’m confident that the year ahead looks set to be another fantastic one – for Spar, for The National Lottery and for good causes.”
