Symbol group Spar UK reports it is already having a very happy 2015, with excellent Christmas and New Year trading figures, striking Shop & Win campaign results, and Spar brand back on TV screens to boot.
Spar said its like-for-like wholesale sales were up +3.53% and like-for-like Spar brand wholesale sales up +8.14%, excluding tobacco, in the week ending 28 December 2014. In the same week, company owned store like-for-like retail sales were up 5%.
The good results continued on into the New Year with like-for-like wholesale sales for week ending 4 January 2015 at +4.08% and like-for-like Spar brand wholesale sales up +2%, excluding tobacco.
In a backdrop of some multiple retailers seeing sales significantly drop over the festive period, this success is even more impressive, marking the growing popularity of convenience shopping, said Spar.
Spar said its results come after a strong focus on own brand range, which will now continue to be supported by TV advertising.
A new Spar brand advert, featuring a Spar band stir-fry meal deal that feeds a family of four “all for £5”, is on screens until 20 January.
The ad showcases products from its Oriental range including Spar Skinless Chicken Breast, Spar Sweet Chilli Stir Fri Sauce and Spar Chinese Stir Fry Sauce, and includes a bolt-on to highlight the great value deal.

We have made a huge investment into developing the best marketing, sales, retail and commercial plan for the future which continues to challenge our competition.
“Our investment into developing a credible offer for Christmas paid off. Perlezza Prosecco wholesale sales eight weeks to 4 January 2015 were up by a staggering 70%.
“Our new advert focuses on our Spar brand stir fry products, which not only provide a quick and easy meal, but at only £5 offers fantastic value to families at this time of year.
“I’m also very pleased that we have acquired some prime spots for the product and price advert around popular programmes including Coronation Street, Emmerdale and The Chase,” he said.
Adding to Spar UK’s great start to the year is the immediate success of the new Shop & Win campaign, added Rondepierre.
“More than 15,000 Spar customers have already entered the competition in week one, with over 10,000 mobile vouchers issued and an initial redemption rate of 10% – which is expected to rise as the campaign progresses.
“This winning combination of good festive sales, our high-profile media campaign back on screens and positive Shop & Win involvement is setting Spar UK’s 2015 to a flying start – with no doubt more success to come,” he said.
