Splashing out on mums is set to push spending this Mothe’s Day weekend to a record high, according to data from Halifax.
In recent years, card spend over the weekend of Mother’s Day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) has grown from £69.6 million in 2014 to £71.9 million in 2015, before reaching £75.6 million in 2016. This represents an average rate of annual growth of 4.2%.
If the increasing trend for Britons to treat their mums generously on Mother’s Day continues in 2017, it is set to be a record year with card spending expected to reach £79 million over the coming weekend.
Spending on Mother’s Day itself has grown more quickly than spending over the whole weekend, suggesting many of us treat our mums to a special day, or leave the gift-buying to the last minute. Total spend on Mothering Sunday reached £19 million last year, up 6% on an annual basis.
Jon Roberts, director of cards at Halifax, comments: “Our data suggests we’re a generous nation, treating our mums a little more every year. Certainly in financial terms, Mother’s Day is a growing feature of the calendar. Not only are we spending more in the days leading up to Mothering Sunday, but we’re spoiling mums on the day itself too, making sure they know they’re loved and appreciated.”
