Barr Construction has been appointed to create a 23,600sq ft Tesco Metro store on Park Road, Faringdon, Oxfordshire.
The new store will feature a bakery, deli, a cash machine, customer toilets and a combination of staffed and self-service tills. A staff area will be created with a canteen, cash office and meeting room.
Beth Greenhouse, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: “We’re really pleased to be starting on site and to be getting that bit closer to opening our new store for the local community.”
The contractor starts work on site this week and will build and fit out the store over 17 weeks.
As part of the contract Barr’s staff will provide 153 parking spaces, a new service yard and will be working on the surrounding roads to improve access for traffic and pedestrians.
The eco-friendly store will be constructed with a sustainable timber frame and timber cladding and will feature large translucent roof panels to allow natural light into the building.
A rainwater harvesting system will be installed to recycle rainwater for use within the building.
The construction team will seek to use local contractors where possible during their work on the Faringdon store.
Over the next couple of weeks Barr will host an event for both the local community and suppliers to introduce the construction team, provide information about the project and encourage subcontractors to engage with Barr’s representatives.
Andy Ferguson, operations manager at Barr Construction, said: “Barr Construction enjoys a positive relationship with Tesco which stretches back over two decades, giving the Barr team invaluable experience of delivering stores for the retailer.
“We seek to engage with local communities during all of our projects and we will be sure to keep Faringdon residents informed throughout the construction of their new store.”
The store is expected to open to the public in November this year.
