The Co-operative’s own-brand vintage Champagne has scooped its second major accolade in a week after winning Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA).

The win means the convenience retailer’s own brand Les Pionniers Vintage 2004 Champagne has beaten competition from top-drawer Champagnes and rival retailers at the world’s two most influential wine awards, after it also potted Gold at the International Wine Challenge 2013.

The DWWA is the largest consumer wine competition, and the rigorous judging process has led to the DWWA becoming the most authoritative source of wine recommendations worldwide. This year, the 219 judges from around the world assessed 14,362 wines from 52 countries. This year’s expert panel of judges included 75 Masters of Wine, and 13 Master Sommeliers.

The Co-operative’s own-brand Les Pionniers Vintage 2004 Champagne, £26.99, which is named after its revolutionary Rochdale founders, is made by Régis Camus at Piper Heidsieck, and is fast becoming the Champagne of choice for customers looking for a high-quality fizz at a great-value price, according to the retailer.

To celebrate its success, customers will be able to save £3 on the own brand vintage Champagne, which will be on promotion at £23.99 from 22 May 2013 while stocks last.

Ben Cahill, The Co-operative Champagne buyer, said: “It’s fantastic news that our Les Pionniers Vintage 2004 Champagne has picked up two Gold medals at these prestigious competitions. This recognition confirms what we already know – that our Champagne is great quality and amazing value for money – perfect for celebrating with.”

Meanwhile, another IWC Gold winner, The Co-operative Les Pionniers NV Champagne, picked up Bronze at the DWWA. The award-winning Champagne is now on promotion at £16.99 (from £19.99) until 16 July 2013, inclusive.

The Co-operative Explorer’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012, which was awarded Bronze in both competitions, is also now on promotion at £7.99 (from £8.99) until 4 June 2013, inclusive.

In total, The Co-operative picked up six medals at the Decanter World of Wine Awards.
