Top of the Shops: online grocery sales by volume w/e 19/9/12

Asda: Nine brands get into Asda’s top 50 online basket this week, the same as last time. Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Breakfast Biscuits are down 60% on a week ago and win a position in the basket, as a result. Asda has increased the number of Smartprice products this week – up to 14 from 11 last time. The retailer’s Chosen by You Tomato Ketchup retains its top 50 place in the basket and is joined by Chosen by You English Mature Cheddar this week. Price changes are largely focused on fresh produce with Asda Mushrooms up 66% and Asda Celery up 48% on a week ago.


Ocado: Waitrose’s Essentials label continues to make inroads in the Ocado top 50 online basket, accounting for 22 products this week, up from 19 last time. Like Waitrose, Cirio Chopped Tomatoes take a top four ranking with a 50% price reduction on last week. Once again the basket features more price fluctuations than its rivals. These help introduce new brands into the basket including Simple Baby Moisturising Wipes (50% cheaper than last week). Houghton Hams Northamptonshire Cured Cooked Sliced Cooked Ham (also half price this week compared to last) and Weetabix Oaty Bars Milk Chocolate Smasher, down 59% on last time.


Sainsbury’s: Sainsbury’s top 50 online basket features 17 brands this week, up from 13 last time. The Basics value brand, which featured five times last week, appears just three times in this week’s basket. The retailer’s premium Taste the Difference brand has just one showing, Sweet Clementines. Prices are largely unchanged on a week ago.


Tesco: Fourteen brands feature in Tesco’s top 50 online grocery basket this week, up one from 13 last week.
Branston Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce – half price compared with a week ago – are a new entry; as are Walkers Meaty Variety crisps. Nestle Shreddies, down 50% on a week ago, is another brand on Tesco shoppers’ online lists this week.
The Everyday Value brand appears 14 times in the basket, unchanged on last week. It includes Tesco Everyday Value Tortilla Wraps which, priced at 89p, nudge out Mission from the basket this week. Petits Filous Frubes, Cheestrings Original, Flora Buttery and Cathedral City Mature Cheddar are the notable price increases compared with last week – all have doubled in price in this latest period.


Waitrose: Seven national brands make it into Waitrose’s top 50 online basket, up from four last time. New entrants include Anchor Butter and Heinz Baked Beanz in Tomato Sauce. Cirio Chopped Tomatoes are half price, compared with a week ago, and earn a top four ranking. Finish All in One Powerball Dishwasher Tablets Lemon are also 50% cheaper, retailing at £9.99 this week, and win a place in the top 50 too. The Essential Waitrose label still dominates the online basket but is down from 43 to 37 lines this week.
