Shopping website VoucherCodes reports visitors to its site between Boxing Day and 9 January 2012 increased by 44% compared with last year, as the nation logged on post-Christmas to pick up the very best offers in the sales.
The high level of post-Christmas traffic follows record visitor numbers for December 2011, it said; with over six million shoppers using the site to secure deals – a 50% increase from December 2010.
The number of retailers offering additional discounts online to supplement sales activity has also rocketed this year, said VoucherCodes.
The volume of deals featured on the site between 26 December 2011 and 9 January 2012 was 90% higher than the same period last year, as retailers fought for consumers’ hard earned cash.
VoucherCodes said it currently has over 550 different retailers offering active discount voucher codes across the site.
Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes, said: “The nation’s finances are severely stretched at the moment, making it incredibly tough for the retail sector – you only have to look at how many stores have started the year by reporting turbulent December sales figures.
“However, since the start of this season’s sales we have seen huge levels of demand online, as increasingly web-savvy and money conscious consumers look to stretch their pound as far as possible.
“It feels like the retail sector has finally recognised the power of online discounting as a tool for customer acquisition, a trend reflected in the dramatic rise in merchants offering additional discounts we have seen during this seasons sales.”
