Wanzl, the largest supplier of retail equipment in the UK, is calling on British retailers to inject some colour into their customers’ lives by introducing its brightly coloured plastic Tango trolleys to their stores. 

Following a €40m investment in Tango plastic trolleys by Carrefour for its Planet format hypermarkets in Europe, Wanzl is hoping UK retailers will commit in volume to the eye-catching trolleys. Among those who have already ventured to introduce Tango in selected stores are retailers TK Maxx, John Lewis and B&Q.

Since the 2002 introduction of the Tango, the design has steadily risen in popularity to become one of the favourite choices of European retailers, particularly in the supermarket category, reports Wanzl. 

The Tango trolley is highly recyclable and its compatibility with emerging RFID technologies also positions the product at the forefront of eco-friendly, modern trolley design, the company claims. In addition to the main fleet 220-litre capability, Tango trolleys are also available in 75, 90 and 160 litre options and are suitable for all store formats from convenience stores to hypermarkets.

Wanzl UK group managing director, Dean Rolland, said: “While we are delighted to have been awarded this valuable business in mainland Europe, our sights are now firmly set on growing the popularity of plastic trolleys in the UK market. Shopping is becoming an important leisure experience and our research suggests the strategic use of colour lightens moods, reduces stress and engages the interest of the customer. The Tango is also noticeably lighter and quieter than equivalent steel trolleys, which all helps to enhance the overall shopping experience.”

According to Rolland, the often-overlooked shopping trolley accompanies the shopper for most of the retail journey and the Tango provides brands with a new opportunity to carry their message directly to the consumer using bold colours and on-board advertising space.

The Tango trolley has been supplied to over 500 Carrefour stores in France, Belgium, Spain, Greece and Italy. The stylish, colour-branded Tango trolleys complement the modern Planet format; which features wider aisles, clearly delineated product zones and more floor space for frozen and organic foods, beauty and fashion.

As well as trolleys, Wanzl shopfitting is providing a bespoke shelving solution for the Planet organics department. Wanzl shopfitting will produce and supply the system for all organic retail areas of up to 400sq m within 500 Carrefour Planet stores.
