Retailer Edward White picked up the prestigious Baldwin Trophy at Blakemore Trade Partners’ SRS Awards Ceremony in recognition of his commitment to developing his business.

The trophy is awarded to one retailer every year and celebrates the very best stores in the Meridian & Welsh Guild region.

White’s Calver joined SPAR in 2002 and has continued to grow and develop since. The third-generation family business operates a farm shop and forecourt store in Calver, Derbyshire.

The farm shop, which opened in 2013, sells a wide range of convenience lines as well as locally produced foods. It now boasts an impressive Daily Deli food-to-go range as well as an Insomnia coffee outlet.

In 2017 White’s Calver upgraded its forecourt in line with the image of its farm shop, with wooden display units, new chiller cabinets, local photos from the past and brick-style vinyl on the walls to give it a rustic look. Sales increased by 25%.

The business also added more local products to its farm shop, which now features goods from more than 30 local suppliers, all producing their products within 10 miles of the store. A fresh orange juicer was installed as well as new ranges including gluten-free lines, specialist spirits and energy bars as and when requested by customers.

A range review programme provided by Blakemore Trade Partners continues to refresh store categories, ensuring that customers can always get what they want.

Edward commented: “We constantly look at and use planograms to review our ranges and ensure we stock the correct products for our business and customer base. Every category review that BTP has provided has resulted in increased sales in that department.”

Blakemore Trade Partners sales director Neil Mercer commented: “Congratulations to White’s Calver on all of their achievements. Edward has demonstrated outstanding commitment to his local community and store development, and this is a very well deserved win.”

Edward added: “We are very proud to have won this award. We are committed to supporting our local community, stocking products from more than 30 local suppliers, and pride ourselves on offering jobs to local people.

“We try to keep up with customer trends and keep evolving our stores constantly. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff at White’s Calver and all of our customers for their continued support.”
