Planet Organic and Whole Foods Market are stocking the Mamajaan’s brand of curry sauces, developed by a north Londoner who began selling her own-recipe fresh curry sauces just 18 months ago.
Anjam Jabeen initially developed her fresh, natural ‘London’ curry sauces to satisfy the demands of friends and neighbours, but word soon reached local retail food buyers, who asked the charity worker to produce them for their stores.
Weekly sales of Mamajaan’s pots – Hampstead Harooni, Camden Chitur and the award-winning Belsize Bhuna and Keats Kashmir – are reported to have soared and caught the attention of Planet Organic and Whole Foods Market, the country’s largest organic supermarkets, which have now started stocking the range in selected London branches.
Jabeen said: “It’s a dream come true for my sauces to be stocked on the shelves of some of London’s most respected food halls.
“Judging by the way Mamajaan’s has taken off over the past year and a half it seems that while London loves curry, after a day at work people are just too busy to make their own sauces from scratch and welcome the option of a healthy, fresh alternative to fatty takeaways and long-life jars.”
Designed to enhance meat, fish, pulses and vegetables, Mamajaan’s low-fat, low-salt sauces are made using family spice blends and enhanced by the cooking skills Jabeen developed during time spent with family in the Punjabi as a teenager.
The success of the young company has seen Jabeen progress from cooking batches for friends at home to employing six staff at an industrial kitchen in north London, where thousands of pots of sauces are made every month using only fresh, healthy, natural ingredients.
Mamajaan’s cook-in sauce RRP per pot is £3.99.
