Employees from Spar wholesaler AF Blakemore dug out their gardening gloves and got green-fingered on 15 May 2013 to take part in Give and Gain Day 2013.

The team, consisting of employees from both the Talbot Green and Tipton depots, got their tools ready and set to work to create a sensory garden for the tenants of RCT Homes-run Church View Close in Brynna. They were joined by volunteers from RCT Homes.

The volunteers carried out a series of tasks aimed at creating a garden which can be enjoyed by all senses including cutting back overgrown trees, re-designing flower beds, re-establishing pathway boundaries, and installing a water feature and new benches.

The team also spruced up the accommodation’s entrance by painting the hand rails.

Give and Gain Day is the UK’s largest day of employee volunteering, organised by business-led charity Business in the Community. Its purpose is to give employees the chance to give something to a local community from which they will gain skills not necessarily developed in a normal working environment.

A spokesperson for AF Blakemore said: “Everybody really enjoyed volunteering. It is really important to our business that we give something back to our local communities who support our Spar stores and hopefully the tenants will benefit from the work we did.”
