Majestic has launched a new range of wines which the British public have voted as the best wines under £6 in the market.
80% of wines in the the UK off-trade are sold for £6 or less (Source: Nielsen and the Wilson Drinks Report). However, with currency movements in the past year, and an alcohol duty rise in last month’s Budget, it is increasingly difficult to find good quality wines that won’t break your wallet. Exclusive results from the UK public now suggest that Majestic may have pulled it off.
For the first time in it’s 30 year history, Majestic have launched an own-label range aimed squarely at the entry level market. Over 1,000 wine reviews were collected from the British public in a blind tasting against the major supermarkets’ below £6 ranges. Over 65% of those in the blind tasting preferred the Majestic £5.99 wine.
Highlights included the new Romanian Pinot Grigio, which 75% of tasters preferred to an Italian supermarket Pinot Grigio at the same price. Likewise the Majestic Montepulciano polled well – with 71% of people preferring it to the supermarket equivalent.
The Majestic Loves range was picked by Majestic’s buyers from over 500 samples across around the world. It will be launched in Majestic stores across the country this April with a striking series of labels created by French artist Jean Jullien.
John Colley, managing director of Majestic Wine, commented: “The UK public have spoken, so don’t just take our word for it. We set out to create the best possible range at this price point and we’ve created something completely unique. Our buyers tasted over 500 samples to create something special that won’t blow your budget, and it’s fantastic to see so many people agree.”
