The first national lockdown sparked a huge trend of online shopping when we couldn’t visit our favourite stores. We found ourselves spending even more time online because, well, there was little else we could do at a safe social distance. According to research conducted by BABE, 88% of UK consumers admitted to splashing the cash on some sort of purchase online between March and June this year. So, instead of meeting people at events we’ve been making friends with posties and delivery drivers who have been bringing us our perfect Zoom call outfits and ‘essential’ treats. However, some purchases were a little more unusual than others.
It seems the weird and the wonderful became essential to the good old British public – 73% of shoppers don’t regret anything they bought, even if it was a shower curtain covered in space cats in UFOs shooting lasers from their eyes (we’ve added that to our shopping list). Other ‘out-there’ purchases included:
- 3kg of fruit pastels
- 5kg of gherkins
- Half a child’s doll for cake decoration
- A gold-plated PC mouse
- A giant shark from IKEA
- A 30-year-old steak burrito figurine (no, we’re not sure what that is either)
It was Gen Z who were the wackiest shoppers, with 19% confessing to buying something a little unusual online during lockdown.
And do you know what? The second lockdown won’t stop Brits from doing it all over again. 21% of shoppers know exactly what they will purchase this time around, and they aren’t any less unexpected:
- A 30-year old veggie taco figurine (perhaps to go with the burrito one)
- 20 litres of white matt emulsion
- BTS merch
- Net curtains
These were just some that topped the list. As well as that, as many as 12% would buy loo roll first, 6% would buy alcohol and 34% would buy food and soft drinks.
BABE can help you stay chilled about spending
Because of all the online spending (and the more that is to come thanks to lockdown 2.0), BABE, the hot, insta-famous wine with bubbles brand, co-founded by The Fat Jewish, has launched the Bubble ICE-A. Many bank accounts have seen better days, so BABE is running a series of competitions to give customers the chance to win wine and self-care bundles throughout November. The Bubble ICE-A is designed to help you save whilst BABE bring all the bubbles (and more) directly to you.
To celebrate the launch of the Bubble ICE-A, BABE has partnered with Soap & Glory to bring you the ultimate Instagram competition. They are giving two lucky winners the chance to win a mega bundle of wine with bubbles, merch and pampering goodies each. That’s all you need for a chilled night in with your household bubble, so there’s no need to go spending your own dollar!
So how do you get the chance to get your home manicured hands on this? Simply follow @drinkbabeUK and @soapandglory on Instagram, tag the besties that got you through lockdown, and comment with your most random, outrageous lockdown purchase. This competition is running from the 12 November to the 15 November 2020. 18+ only, ts&cs apply, see https://uk.drinkbabe.net/pages/bubble-ice-a-by-babe-soap-glory
