Located in Middlewood Locks, the store runs on 100% renewable electricity and also offers Co-op’s not-for-profit compostable carrier bags for customers who forget their bags-for-life – the 5p bags have a secondary use as a food waste caddy liner in the home, and can be turned into peat free compost.

The new-look store includes a bakery and coffee, alongside its focus on fresh, healthy products, food-to-go, vegan and free-from foods, award winning wines, meal ideas and, essentials.

The Co-op provides a funding boost for local causes through its membership scheme – Members receive a 5% reward when they purchase own-brand products, and Co-op gives a further 1% to local causes.

Co-op also offers a 10% discount off groceries to TOTUM cardholders (the new name for the NUS extra card) to support students during their studies.

Callum Crawford, Co-op store manager, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to make a further significant investment in Salford – the store has a great look and range and we are receiving a fantastic response. It is a real honour to launch Co-op’s newest food store, our aim is for the store to operate at the heart of local life, a community hub making a difference locally.”

Dan Wood, Co-op area manager, added: “Co-op is committed to making a difference and creating value in its communities – whether that is through sustaining local jobs, giving back to local causes or, our support for local suppliers. It is all about delivering what our members and customers want, need and care about, conveniently. We also want our community to know that they can become a co-owner of their Co-op, and that as a Member they raise money for local causes every time they swipe their Membership card when buying own-brand products. The latest investment in and around Salford is a great way for Co-op to mark its 175th anniversary year!”
