Currys PC World, the UK’s number one tech recycler, is on a mission to become the UK’s greenest and most responsible tech retailer, and helping customers get hold of greener tech.

With the aim of transforming the industry and changing the planet for the better, Currys PC World launches the first ever ‘Go Greener’ event to supercharge customers and help them find amazing tech to save water, become more energy-efficient and reduce waste.

Customers who purchase from the amazing range of ‘Go Greener’ tech will benefit from free delivery and installation. Currys PC World will also responsibly recycle your old tech for free.

Kesah Trowell, group head of sustainable business, comments: “The issue of climate change is driving innovation in more eco-friendly tech and we’re excited to showcase some of these developments in our first event aimed at helping our customers go greener.

Customers can also take advantage of our award-winning recycling and reuse operation – we already recycle a whopping 65,000 tonnes of waste electronics every year, making us the biggest recycler of e-waste in UK Retail.  Convenience is key – anyone can also bring unwanted tech into any of our stores and we’ll recycle it responsibly for free. Plus when we deliver a new appliance, we’ll also take away its packaging as well as any small tech for recycling.”

She adds: “Currys PC World is committed to becoming greener, cleaner, and kinder to the planet and we’re making great progress – from powering 100% of our UK properties with renewable energy sources to switching to an electric or alternative fuel fleet by 2030, we’re in pole position to be net zero well ahead of the government’s 2050 target and look forward to bringing our customers on our journey towards a more sustainable future.”

The simple steps we can all take to live greener, and an overview of the amazing tech that’s kinder to our planet include:

Energy

Washing machine manufacturers have really stepped up, and most modern machines now have an ‘eco mode’ setting that lets you be more ecologically friendly, using less water and less energy.

Samsung’s Ecobubble range is a good example. The washing machine has a bubble-generator under the drum which helps water soak through your clothes whilst still being gentle. That means less water – less cost to you, and less waste.

Want great drying results using less electricity? Samsung’s OptimalDry™ technology uses moisture and temperature sensors to adjust your drying time for the perfect result. Not only does it save energy, but it also protects your clothes. Plus, this tumble dryer, which features Heat Pump technology, is gentler on your clothes than a traditional condenser or vented tumble dryer and they won’t cost the earth to run.

Hotpoint also have some clever tricks up its sleeve when it comes to eco-friendly washing. Take its ActiveCare technology, this clever piece of tech can get rid of 100 different stains at just 20 degrees, meaning it’s not only kind to your clothes, but kinder to the planet.

Smart washing machines can be a real help here too. LG’s Wi-fi enabled washing machine can be controlled and monitored from your phone, which is great if you want to keep an eye on your energy usage. Additionally, LG’s ‘Direct Drive’ washing machine range are high-efficiency machines that cut energy costs and water consumption, compared to conventional washing machines

Waste

According to recent research, 65% of UK adults admit they buy too much food that ends up being thrown away. In fact, the average household chucks out almost £30 of food each month, which works out at a whopping £9.7 billion of wasted food each year in the UK.

If you’re thinking of going greener, cutting down on food waste is a great habit to get into, and the latest fridge tech can help you to do this. Smart fridges have some amazing new features which will help your food stay fresher for longer. A few features to look out for include expiry date tracking, smart temperature control, super cool and fast freeze, and blue light technology.

The LG Smart Fridge Freezer uses LINEARCooling and DoorCooling+ to maintain a consistently cool temperature, chilling everything quickly and locking in freshness. Our favourite feature has to be the InstaView door – simply knock twice and you’ll be able to see what’s inside your fridge without opening the door and losing precious cool air.

Another great way of cutting waste is by using a reusable SodaStream Spirit Sparkling Water Maker and SodaStream Carbonating Bottle. Stay hydrated throughout the day and you’ll also save up to 1282 single use plastic bottles from our planet over four years.

Tired of spending your free time cleaning the oven and want to reduce the use of hazardous cleaning chemicals? Pyrolytic auto cleaning does the hard work for you, reducing dirt, grease and food residue to ash that can simply be wiped away once the oven has cooled down.

One cycle of pyrolytic cleaning will cost you under £1 which is significantly less than your average oven cleaner or getting the professionals in. One of our favourites is the AEG Electric Oven.

Water

According to the Energy Saving Trust we use 360 billion litres of water a year in our dishwashers and washing machines, costing us a whopping £1.6 billion in electricity bills.

When it comes to washing machines, selecting a quick wash uses up to 30% less water and is kinder to your clothes. A shorter cycle with fewer clothes means less wear and tear on your washing machine, which in turn should mean a longer life. The Hotpoint ActiveCare Washing Machine is a good model for those looking to save water and energy.

By picking the right dishwasher, you can limit your energy and water use. This might surprise you, but in fact, a newer dishwasher can use less than 12 litres of water per cycle, saving over 3.5 times more water than the average handwashing cycle.

Additionally, some dishwashers have a half load setting which means that they only use the required amount of energy and water without compromising on performance – perfect for when the machine isn’t full. If looking to upgrade your dishwasher, Hotpoint offers a fantastic range of eco-friendly Integrated dishwashers.
