Dutch food group Wessanen has bought UK tea and coffee company, Clipper Teas.

Clipper will be integrated into the group’s UK business, Kallo Foods, which operates the organic brands Kallo and Whole Earth.

Established in 1984, Clipper claims to have been an innovator in the hot beverages market and led the way in green, white and organic teas and Infusions.

It was the first tea in the UK to carry the Fairtrade mark and is the UK’s number one Fairtrade Tea brand. It is also the fastest growing everyday tea brand (Nielsen Scan Track February 2012 MAT Value Sales) and has a turnover of £16m.

Multi-award winning Clipper, is a 100% branded business, and sold in grocery chains, health food stores, food service and in 50 countries across the world. According to Wessanen, the acquisition promises continued growth, international expansion and innovation for the brand.

With a 250-year history and a dedication to promoting the benefits of natural and organic food, Wessanen said its brands are united by a commitment to be a pioneer in organic and natural foods.

Patrick Cairns, CEO of Wessanen UK, said: “Clipper is a very exciting addition to the Wessanen brand portfolio. It has huge growth potential both here and internationally, having already established itself as the UK’s favourite organic and Fairtrade tea brand and there are real synergies between our portfolio of products.

“Wessanen has always provided a nurturing environment for specialist natural and organic brands and this new acquisition takes us further towards our ambition of having the most desired organic brands in Europe. We very much admire what the team at Clipper have achieved and want to build on this, invest in the brand and manufacturing capability.”
