East London salmon smokery, H Forman & Son, announces record figures due to rapid export growth


While the UK trade deficit continues to increase, certain British food producers such as H Forman & Son are bucking the trend by announcing record export figures.

H Forman & Son, the east London-based salmon smokery, has recently announced sales growth in Taiwan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, while sales in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean continue to rise and record sales have been recorded in USA.

Fourth-generation owner Lance Forman said: “Whilst H Forman & Son smoked salmon has been exported for over 50 years, never before have we exported to so many different countries.”

This is part of a larger trend in the food industry, with trade body Institute of Export claiming in January that the UK food and drink export industry is worth approximately £19bn a year, with a record 2,500 companies selling its produce to 150 countries.

H. Forman & Son has performed particularly strongly in the last year, announcing a 28% growth in exports with a 70% increase in exports to the US, making it H Forman & Son’s largest export market. The last 12 months has seen them begin exporting to India, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and they are currently in talks with Mexico, Cambodia and Poland.

Lance said: “As the economy bounces back in the USA, consumers appear to be more interested to trade up into higher quality products and increasingly recognising the Forman’s heritage brand. H Forman & Son is the only non- Italian, non-American, food sold at Eataly’s New York and Chicago outlets.”
H Forman & Son is recognised as the world’s finest purveyor of smoked salmon, supplying to some of the world’s top hotels, restaurants, chefs and retailers including Gordon Ramsay, Marco Pierre White, The Savoy, The Dorchester and The House of Lords.

The brand’s reputation is set to become even stronger in 2015 with the expected announcement of the company’s ‘London Cure’ Smoked Salmon having had British government approval to be awarded PGI-protected status which will make Forman’s, ‘London Cure’ smoked Scottish salmon, London’s first ever PGI-protected product for any food or drink.
