EAT 17 wins IGD Innovative Store of the Year Award

EAT 17’s Spar Hackney has won the prestigious national IGD Innovative Store of the Year Award.

The IGD Awards recognise the achievements of retailers across the UK’s food and grocery industry, with winners being selected by some of the sector’s top people, including representatives from IGD and companies from across the food and grocery supply chain.

Spar EAT 17 Hackney was crowned Innovative Store of the Year at the IGD Awards ceremony on 6 October after beating off competition in their category from leading retailers including Budgens, Waitrose and The Channel Islands Co-operative.

EAT 17 co-founder James Brundle said: “We’re delighted that our Hackney store has been crowned Innovative Store of the Year.  It was our ultimate goal to open a second site with what we think is the business model of the future – an outstanding convenience store with restaurant quality food within.  We believe that we offer a real alternative to the supermarkets, offering local and specialist ranges within a unique setting.”

Angus MacIver, chief executive officer at McCurrach UK, which sponsored the Innovative Store of the Year award, said: “Spar EAT 17 provided us with the most inspiration for the future of convenience retailing, with a fantastic combination of symbol group discipline and street food culture creating a high-revenue, high-margin business in an environment where that is proving increasingly difficult.”

Since it was established in 2007, EAT 17 has become well renowned in the convenience sector for its entrepreneurial flair, innovation and unrivalled quality produce.  The Hackney store offers restaurant quality food within a gourmet convenience store that combines a core range of Spar lines with freshly baked bread and cakes, local produce, EAT 17 homemade ready meals and wine barrels from which customers can fill empty wine bottles in-store.

The store also stocks more than 120 lines from British food and drink producers, supplied by Blakemore Fine Foods, as well as handpicked products from around the world.

Sales at the Hackney site have increased 48% on last year, when the store opened.

The Innovative Store of the Year Award is the latest in a long line of accolades achieved by EAT 17.  In March 2015, Spar EAT 17 Hackney was crowned Best New Store at the 2015 Convenience Retail Awards. The store was also shortlisted for the NACS Insight 2015 International Convenience Retailer of the Year Award.
