Lenny Henry to host 2011 Awards

The finalists have been announced in the World Food Awards 2011.

They include Marley’s Mellow Mood, a range of soft drinks created in the name of the reggae legend; and Nando’s, the Portuguese chicken king, in the running for Best Packaging of the Year award for its range of Peri Peri sauces.

The Restaurant of the Year category promises to be a hotly fought contest, with the newly opened and acclaimed oriental Mayfair eatery Hakkasan; the Covent Garden branch of Jamie Oliver’s Italian chain; and independently-owned Cheltenham-based restaurant, The Curry Corner; featured on Gordon Ramsey’s F Word, all vying for the top spot.

Exotic fruit juice brand, Rubicon makes a play for the Jaguar Best Marketing Campaign following its vibrant campaign around last year’s Cricket World Cup Cricket; while supermarket giants Tesco and Asda battle it out for East End Foods Best National Retailer.

The Awards, now in their third year, have been created by the World Foods Association and recognise growth within this sector and the diversity of cultures and communities which inspire the industry.

The Awards are open exclusively to companies specialising, promoting or stocking products from the following regions: Asian, Oriental, African, Afro-Caribbean, European, East-European, Middle Eastern, South American and Mediterranean.

As the Awards enter the home stretch, the judges, including Adam Leyland, editor of The Grocer; Simon Numphud, head of AA inspectors; and Mintel’s director of innovation & insight, David Jago; will select the overall winners; audited by KPMG’s Sheel Gill.

The Awards take place on 1 October 2011 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

“With a big name line up of finalists like See Woo, Tesco, Asda, Nando’s and Rubicon as well as Hakkasan and Jamie Oliver, the World Food Awards hope to drive world food further into the mainstream and celebrate the people who have worked so hard to help it evolve into a thriving and compelling industry.”
