little Waitrose: hit with customers

Strawberries and Prosecco were among the top-selling lines last weekend at the first little Waitrose in a John Lewis department store, which opened on 20 June 2013.

Customers also took advantage of the expert advice that the specialists working on the meat and fish counter offered, with fish just tipping meat in the popularity stakes. Proving that little Waitrose at John Lewis Watford is perfect for both picking up daily essentials and a weekly shop, milk featured in the top five most sold items, whilst the ready meals and food to go departments were also extremely popular, the retailer reports/

Hoping to strike it lucky and be in with a chance of winning Friday night’s Euro Million roll over, customers stopped by the Lottery desk to pick up a ticket making them one of the most popular items during the first weekend of trading.

Jonathan Field, managing director, John Lewis Watford, said: “The strong trading figures since we opened prove that the new ‘little Waitrose at John Lewis’ concept is really hitting the mark with customers. We’ve had lots of positive feedback over the weekend with many customers saying it’s fantastic to now have this in Watford and others saying that they are impressed with the wide range and variety of products on offer.”

One of the first customers through the doors on opening day was Elaine O’Brien from Abbots Langley, whose daughter is working in the new little Waitrose at John Lewis Watford. She said: “The shop has a really nice feel to it; it’s much more spacious than I thought it would be. I often come to John Lewis Watford so to have little Waitrose in the same building is going to be really handy as up until now, the closest one for me was in St Albans. Plus I think it will really add to the town and make more people want to come here.”

Designed to enable customers to conveniently pick up products from both John Lewis and Waitrose in one visit, local residents were doing just that over the weekend. In the Home department, picnic wear was particularly popular – perhaps to accompany the strawberries and Prosecco that many customers were buying. The first weekend of the John Lewis Summer Clearance was also a hit, especially the reduced handbags and purses in the Womenswear, as well as the traditional Clearance departments such as Linens and Electricals fairing well.

The Place to Eat, opposite the new little Waitrose on the second floor, also saw strong sales as customers stopped by for a drink and snack once they had picked up their Waitrose goods.
