Gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, soya-free Italian Focaccia wins top prize at 2014 FreeFrom Food Awards

An excited crowd of nearly 300 ‘freefrom’ enthusiasts gathered at the Royal College of Physicians in Regents Park this week to watch Antony Worrall Thompson award Anni Reid of Focaccia per Tutti with ’Marble Mo’, the FAIR trophy and the ultimate accolade for ‘freefrom food’, at the annual FreeFrom Food Awards.

In an ever growing sector (the ‘freefrom’ food market is predicted to top the half billion pound mark by 2017), the FreeFrom Food Awards remain the industry’s only award to celebrate excellence and innovation in the field – and there was certainly plenty of both on show at this year’s awards.

“So many good products, and right across the food spectrum from staples to exotica,” said Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, director of the awards. “From freefrom supermarket bread to raw maca powder and coconut frozen yogurt to gluten free beer brewed from sorghum – there are few areas of the food world where ‘freefrom’ has not now penetrated.”

Worrall Thompson, long term patron of the awards, said: “It is so encouraging that every year the range and quality of the products entered for these awards improves, and improves so spectacularly. Most people would be hard pushed to tell that any of this year’s entries to the awards were ‘freefrom’ anything, they are that good!”

Special Award for Services to Gluten-free Beer

A special award – an engraved pewter beer mug – was also made to David Ware of Green’s Gluten Free Beers for Green’s contribution to the development of gluten-free beer over the last five years – and for their India Pale Ale, the winner of this year’s Gluten-free beer category.

“We were just amazed,” said the brewer judges of this category, “that Green’s had been able to create such a quality ale from sorghum alone, with no addition of barley. A real brewing achievement.”

Udi’s Gluten Free Highly Commended at Free From Food Awards

Within six months of launching into the UK, Udi’s Gluten Free has been hailed ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2014 Free From Food Awards.

Getting the thumbs up from judges, Udi’s Cranberry Walnut Granola received a ‘Highly Commended’ accreditation in the Breakfast Foods category and a ‘Commended’ certification for both its Cinnamon and Raisin Bagels and its crisp and crunchy Bagel Chips in the Innovation Award and ‘Food to Go’ categories respectively.
