Gumtree UK gives boost to small businesses with launch of new competition

Business boost for SMEs

Gumtree UK, the online classifieds platform, has announced the launch of a competition to help give small businesses based in Great Britain a boost as the country recovers from lockdown.

The overall winner will win a £10K cash prize, a free Tide Cashback upgrade for three months, a free SumUp Air card reader, a free Builder.ai app and 12 months’ free data, calls and texts on any handset from O2 Business, plus an advertising package on Gumtree (worth £3k). There are also 2 runner up prizes, each receiving £5K cash prize, a free Tide Cashback upgrade for three months, a free SumUp Air card reader, a free Builder.ai app each and 12 months’ free data, calls and texts on any handset from O2 Business each, as well as an advertising package on Gumtree (worth £3K). A further 10 businesses will be awarded a Gumtree Blast-Off package & Tide, O2 Business & SumUp Partners Blast-Off packages (excl. Builder.ai).

Gumtree has seen first-hand the impact the crisis has had on small and local businesses, in particular for those offering close-contact health and beauty services and those in the retail trade, many of whom have had to completely pause their businesses in response to restrictions across the country. The Small Business Blast Off Competition, created and run by Gumtree, launched in partnership with Tide and supported by O2 Business, Builder.ai and SumUp, will help SMEs zoom out of lockdown and make the most of new opportunities as lockdown measures are eased.

The competition launches this week and is searching for micro and small businesses in Great Britain that have shown exceptional innovation, agility and community spirit as they’ve managed the challenges of the past few months.

Hannah Rouch, chief marketing officer, Gumtree UK, commented: “This past year has been exceptionally difficult for many entrepreneurs and small business owners. We have seen some sectors disproportionately affected by lockdown restrictions and many SMEs are at the stage now where they need a boost to help them get back on their feet and in front of customers again.

“Our aim with this competition is to do just that. We know from the many small businesses that rely on Gumtree to reach people in their local area, just how many have hustled and embraced their entrepreneurialism to keep their business going despite the circumstances. We want to celebrate them and arm them with a little extra support to kick-start the summer and take advantage of our journey out of lockdown.”

A boost for small business

Gumtree UK, and its competition partners, will also provide 10 supporting Blast-Off packages to top entrants. These include a business masterclass (Tide), mobile card readers (SumUp) and 12 months’ free data, calls and texts on any handset (O2 Business) as well as advertising packages for Gumtree.com.

To enter, business owners need to record a 2 minute video explaining how they have coped over the past year and what plans the prizes will help them realise in 2021. The judging panel will be looking for examples of community spirit, resourcefulness and innovation. Business owners can find out how to enter the competition here.

Rouch continued: “We’re grateful for the support of our partners for working with us on this competition. The SME sector is the backbone of the UK economy and absolutely fundamental to vibrant local communities. We believe that the only way to truly ‘build back better’ is to support this community to thrive, an ambition shared by all of the partners involved.”

Entries must be received by 16 May 2021. Open only to businesses registered/established in England & Wales or Scotland, with max 15 employees and not in an excluded category. Business contact entering must be over 18. Max 1 entry per business. Prizes subject to winners successfully completing credit checking procedures (or other required checks), eligibility requirements and entering into separate terms and conditions for prizes. Full T&Cs apply.
