Ikea is automating its cash handling at more than 40 stores in 10 countries following a pilot in France and Germany.

The furniture retailer has invested in Wincor Nixdorf’s new CINEO solution, which enables cash to be automatically verified at the end of a shift and stored in an audit-proof manner in the system’s storage unit.

According to Wincor Nixdorf, Ikea is the first retailer in the world to use its cash handling system.

At the start of each shift, authorised employees are assigned precisely defined quantities of notes and coins.

The cash is stored in intelligent cassettes, which can also be used by cash-in-transit operators to take it away. The new solution increases security and ensures significant time savings by eliminating the cost and effort involved in handling cash, claims Wincor Nixdorf.

In addition, Ikea is migrating its worldwide POS software to Wincor Nixdorf’s TP Application Suite. The move follows installation in Canada and the UK. Ikea aims to complete the roll out by 2013.
