Independents’ Day UK – a grass-roots campaign is calling on shoppers across the UK to spend £5 with an independent retailer this Thursday, 4 July.
The group suggests that if every adult in the UK was to spend £5 a week with an independent retailer, around £13.5 billion a year worth of additional revenue could be generated for small businesses in the retail sector.
The campaign’s organisers estimate that at least 100 different town management teams, business improvement districts (BIDs) and local business groups across the country are participating in initiatives to promote the day.
Independents’ Day UK also has the support of the British Independent Retailers Association (bira) and the Independent Retailers Confederation (IRC).
Howard Robinson, a spokesperson for the campaign, comments: “Whether it’s supplies for Saturday’s barbecue, or strawberries and cream to enjoy while watching Wimbledon on the telly – the message is simple: spend £5 with an independent business this Thursday.”
“We’re familiar with high street closures hitting the headlines, however data released by bira showed it’s not all doom and gloom, with independent retailers opening 4.5% more shops in 2018 than in 2017.
“However, this number was offset by a record number of stores closing (35,524), which led to an overall net decline of -1,013 shops. As far as independent retail is concerned, it really is a case of use them, or lose them.”
“The economic benefits of a healthy independent retail sector meanwhile, are clear: real jobs, vibrant high streets and stronger local communities.”
Gravesend’s Town Centre Manager, Graham Long has rallied a number of independent firms in the town to get involved in the cause, with Danslow’s Butchers on Windmill Street offering 15 per cent off barbecue hampers for one day only. Marie’s Emporium on Gravesend High Street is providing a free incense set with all purchases on Independent’s Day.
In Prescot, bar and charcuterie – Urbano Chiringuito is partnering with Pinion, a local bistro on a night of nostalgic 1986-themed dining across both premises in the Merseyside town, to celebrate Independents’ Day.
Robinson adds, “Whether it’s one day only discounts and promotions or unique collaborations with other local businesses, Independents’ Day should act as a vehicle to drive people to your premises.
“Independents are vibrant, diverse and distinguish themselves for great customer service and for being at the heart of their communities. This is the time for communities to demonstrate the value they place on their independents.”
