Inverleith LLP, the Edinburgh-based specialist consumer brand investor has acquired a majority stake in Farmison & Co, the UK’s leading premium online butcher to help power its future growth plans.
Focused on British heritage and rare breeds, and an ethical, sustainable supply chain, Farmison has established itself as the UK’s leading player in growing online premium meat and butchery market.
Established in 2011 by John Pallagi and Lee Simmonds in England’s beautiful North Yorkshire Dales, Farmison is on a mission to encourage UK consumers to ‘eat better meat’.
Farmison has a focus on delivering the highest quality, taste and traceability of its meat products. Buying direct from hand-picked sustainable and responsible British farms, Farmison’s exclusive and traceable supply chain takes superb British artisanal produce on a journey from farmers’ fields to home cooks’ kitchens.
With the widest range of heritage breed meat online across the globe, Farmison focuses on a diverse range of quality cuts, maturation and recipe inspiration from British heritage and rare breeds.
Farmison’s meat is always British, free-range, naturally fed and dry-aged and the business is leading the return of pure British rare breeds across beef (such as Gloucester, Longhorn and White Park), British free range pork (such as Berkshire and Gloucestershire Old Spot) and lamb (such as Herdwick and Ryeland) to British tables.
Farmison, based in the city of Ripon, has an ethical and sustainable approach to meat production. Its shepherds and herdsmen, from areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the North York Moors National Park, the rolling Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Wolds and the Lake District, adhere to the principles of traditional animal husbandry through the natural welfare of the animals, working in the spirit of raising beef cattle, sheep and pigs to enjoy healthy, stress free lives.
Farmison is committed to seasonal local food, backing responsible British farmers and smallholders. It is part of a wider consumer transition to extensive regenerative agriculture in food production.
Farmison & Co has been awarded UK’s Online Butcher Shop of The Year in three of the last five years, as well as winning Best Independent Retailer (Observer Food Monthly Awards) and a number of Great Taste Awards.
The investment by Inverleith LLP will see the company push forward with its mission to introduce more consumers to the finest traceable and sustainably sourced beef, pork and lamb breeds from the British Isles, allowing more consumers to ‘eat better meat’, bred to perfection to yield more marbling and fuller flavour.
Commenting on the Inverleith LLP investment, John Pallagi, Farmison’s Founder and CEO said: “We now have the backing to take the business to the next stage and for our mission to encourage more people to eat better meat.
”This is a pivotal moment not just for the future of Farmison but for the sector. We have spent time searching for the right partner to take our business forward and to realise our ambition of delivering better meat, ethically and sustainably sourced, from heritage and rare British breeds, to consumers up and down the country.
“This investment will help drive production standards across the wider sector, help educate consumers and help us explain more powerfully why better meat is better for customers, the planet and the long term success of the farming sector in the UK.
“Inverleith specialises in and understands premium consumer conscious brand businesses and with their commercial expertise, Farmison’s future is bright.
“As Founder, I’m looking forward to developing a close working relationship with the team at Inverleith”.
Following the investment by Inverleith LLP, Farmison co-founder John Pallagi will continue to lead the business as Founder, supported by a new board of directors, and his existing loyal management team.
Inverleith LLP Chair, Ben Thomson, said: “We have admired Farmison & Co for some time, supporting its vision for the future of the premium consumer meat industry. As consumers adopt increasingly flexitarian diets, they are increasingly choosing high quality, great tasting meat which has a traceable, local supply chain, delivered ethically and supporting a sustainability agenda. All these elements have been set at the heart of Farmison & Co.
“The value and principles of Farmison strike a chord with modern day consumers and in Inverleith’s care, we will strengthen these product qualities and company values, helping more consumers ‘eat better meat’. I’m delighted to welcome Farmison into Inverleith’s collection of premium consumer brands, where it makes a great addition to our portfolio”.
