John Lewis puts Partners first in new healthy food initiative


The in house Partner dining facilities at the John Lewis head office in Victoria, London has reason to celebrate this week as they have been awarded a national food award from the Soil Association.

The Bronze Food for Life Served Here award has been achieved by the catering team who operate the head office restaurant, which serves up to 2,500 people a day and is just one of a number of initiatives by John Lewis to prioritise good food across Partner food outlets.

The head chef and department manager from the Victoria HQ of John Lewis have actively championed good food by securing the award which is designed to ensure that meals are local, fresh and honest. Partners eating at the on-site restaurant can be assured that all meals served maintain high standards of traceability, freshness and provenance. What’s more there is a new pizza oven serving sourdough pizzas, a tasty salad bar and a nutritional counter serving healthier options.

Whilst working towards their award the team went out to visit other organisations who have achieved the award so far, such as Friends House, University of the Arts London and others to get tips and advice. Yesterday the favour was returned as guests from these establishments and took in amazing views across the London skyline at a celebration event in the Partner dining room and roof terrace.

Dan Blackburn, Head Chef at the John Lewis Head Office said: “It is such a big achievement for us and an amazing step in the right direction for workplace nutrition. As Head Chef, my food ethos is about ensuring we deliver quality food at prices that are accessible for everyone. I strive to use fresh ingredients wherever possible…the more we can encourage our Partners to eat healthily, responsibly, and seasonally, the better!”

The award recognises restaurants and caterers who serve local, fresh and honest food, which is free from controversial additives and better for animal welfare, and includes a rigorous on-site inspection.

Lizzi Testani from the Soil Association said: “It is fantastic that the catering team at the head quarters at John Lewis are not only serving tasty meals to Partners but have also used the award to ensure that those meals are sustainably sourced and highlight provenance. It is great to hear this first Food for Life Served Here award may be one of many for John Lewis.”

Joining the likes of Jaguar Landrover, Selfridges staff restaurants, Scottish Parliament and City Hall London to name but a few, the John Lewis award signals a growing number of employers who are choosing to join the Food for Life Served Here scheme and have an independent inspection for their staff food outlets. With staff often consuming over a third of their daily calories whilst at work these award achievements are the first of many positive steps to improve the quality of food on offer within the workplace.
