Lidl GB’s household and cosmetics ranges granted approval under the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny programme

Cruelty Free International – the leading organisation working to end animal testing – and Lidl GB, are delighted to announce the supermarket’s approval under the Leaping Bunny cruelty free programme.

Over 100 products in Lidl GB’s own-brand household and cosmetics ranges, available nationwide in all of the discounter’s stores, are now Leaping Bunny approved. This means that, starting this Veganuary, customers can purchase cruelty free shampoo, shower gel, washing powder, dishwasher tablets and other products for less at Lidl.

The Leaping Bunny is the globally recognisable gold standard for cruelty free cosmetics, personal care, household and cleaning products with requirements that go above and beyond laws restricting animal testing. Approval must be given to all of a brand’s finished products – individual products or items cannot be approved in isolation.

For Lidl GB’s household and cosmetics ranges to be approved, the discount supermarket had to forensically investigate its entire supply chain, including all raw materials and individual ingredients.

Cruelty Free International’s Leaping Bunny is the only cruelty free approval that requires a supplier monitoring system to be implemented by the brand, supply chain checking right down to ingredient manufacturer level, adherence to a fixed cut-off date policy and acceptance of ongoing independent audits to ensure compliance.

Gaining the Leaping Bunny approval forms part of Lidl GB’s efforts to build on its sustainability commitments, following the promotion of its vegan food range Vemondo to the UK earlier this year.

Since 2017, Leaping Bunny has seen a 190% increase in brands enquiring about approval, demonstrating that global consumer demand for cruelty free products is impacting how brands operate.

Michelle Thew, Cruelty Free International CEO, said: “Lidl is a much-loved high street brand, known for its affordable products which don’t compromise on quality. So, we’re thrilled to be able to grant the Lidl GB ’s household and cosmetics ranges Leaping Bunny approval, making cruelty free Veganuary swaps this January both affordable and accessible across the country.

“Leaping Bunny approval is rigorous and take many months, and it’s no mean feat to do this for both cosmetics and household products at the same time! Congratulations to Lidl GB and welcome to the growing Leaping Bunny family.”

Lidl GB’s head of responsible sourcing and ethical trade, Amali Bunter, said: “At Lidl GB, we are committed to sourcing products in a responsible and sustainable way and we are delighted to announce that we have achieved the Leaping Bunny approval from Cruelty Free International on both our cosmetic and household ranges. We recognise the importance of protecting animal welfare throughout all our supply chains and customers can now buy cruelty free products in all Lidl GB stores.”
