Lidl strengthens Fairtrade cocoa commitment as Faitrade sales grow by 51% in 2019

Lidl GB has taken a significant step forward in its sustainable cocoa sourcing with the launch of its Way to Go! range of Fairtrade certified chocolate bars in their UK stores. Containing fully traceable Fairtrade cocoa from Kuapa Kokoo co-operative in Ghana, producers are guaranteed the Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium, an additional amount of cash farmers can choose to invest in their business, family, communities and environment.

Recognising the way to go that there still is for cocoa producers to earn a living income, Lidl is also paying an additional premium to the cocoa producers involved in the production of these bars. This additional payment will be used to help fund projects that help farmers increase their income, including diversification projects to grow more local crops, like honey, that will help support a sustainable future and provide secure livelihoods for farmers and their families.

This builds on Lidl’s existing commitment of 100% certified sustainable cocoa, demonstrating to the market that affordable chocolate can be sustainable too. This initiative is part of Lidl’s increasing commitment to Fairtrade, with sales of Fairtrade products in Lidl stores growing by 51% in 2019.

Catherine David, head of commercial partnerships at the Fairtrade Foundation, comments: “We’re proud to have partnered with Lidl on this exciting new range that provides added value to farmers beyond the Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium, through additional investment in the communities that are growing their cocoa. These delicious sweet treats, which we’re all looking forward to tasting, will be even more enjoyable knowing they are fully traceable, sustainable and improving the lives of cocoa farmers. Way to go Lidl!”

Available in three flavours, rich dark chocolate, creamy milk chocolate and moreish milk chocolate with caramelised almonds & sea salt. Lidl’s Way to Go! chocolate bars will be available to pick up on your weekly shop from 9th July.
