Pepperoni is nation’s favourite pizza, Goodfella’s Pizza reveals

Researchers polled the nation and revealed pizza topped with the spicy Italian American sausage is the nation’s favourite, with a resounding 30 percent of the vote.

And pizza purists will be shocked to learn that the traditional Neapolitan Margherita only came in third place in the poll, being beaten to second place by a topping of barbecued chicken.

The Margherita was first created on June 11, 1889, when Neapolitan pizza maker Raffaele Esposito created the “Pizza Margherita” to honour the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy.

Traditionally the pizza is garnished with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, to represent the colours of the flag of Italy.

The classic Hawaiian pizza, topped with ham and pineapple came in fourth place, followed by a meatball pizza, and then the Quattro Formaggio.

When it comes to how we like our pizza base, pizza aficionados will also be perturbed, as the majority (40%) opted for a cheese stuffed crust, with the traditional stone baked, thin base coming second (39%).

Almost two in 10 Brits (19%) prefer a Chicago style deep dish pizza pie, while a modern 14% opted for a sourdough base.

A health-conscious 6% said they would prefer a cauliflower base rather than traditional dough.

However, the nation is divided over some toppings, with a quarter of those polled (23%) insisting that adding pineapple to a pizza is a crime.

One in 10 (9%) said toppings like chicken tikka or BBQ chicken are just wrong.

A spokesperson for Goodfella’s Pizza, which commissioned the study said: “Our research indicates that the perfect pizza continues to be an important area of discussion for Brits, and we can now reveal that the nation’s best loved pizza is the classic pepperoni.

“With people spending so much time at home, we’ve seen a big increase in demand for frozen pizza and our sales are up 16% compared to last year. We’ve also noticed a shift in customer behaviour, as many people are having pizza for a quick and tasty lunch – but are also being more experimental with their topping choices.

“Saying that, we’re not surprised to see pepperoni topping the nation’s favourite list, as our Stonebaked Thin Pepperoni Pizza has long been a best seller. Our stonebaked pizzas are perfect for any time of the day, and with a wide range of meat, veggie and vegan options, there is something to suit all tastes.”

And according to the 2,000 Brits surveyed, a further 11% were adamant that sweetcorn has no place on a pizza, while 15% said the biggest pizza topping crime was adding kebab meat.

Twenty six per cent of those surveyed said it is acceptable to eat leftover cold pizza for breakfast.
