Secret Santa set to be a £320m event in 2017, Poundland reports

New research from Poundland today reveals that as a nation we are spending more than £320 million pounds on the Secret Santa ritual, with almost a quarter – worth approximately £80 million – being thrown away unused.

Brits growing obsession with Secret Santa is set to near the heights of Father’s Day gifting this year, as pressure mounts amongst colleagues and loved ones this week to get Secret Santa presents right.

Concerned by poor Secret Santa gift selection popular high-street discount retailer took a look at the issues facing helpless Secret Santa’s across the nation, as part of their mission to end bad gift choices.

The Poundland Secret Santa Report identified that the main problem faced by shoppers was not being able to find the right gift (42%) for the given budget, or simply struggling with the budget as a whole (27%) – resulting in boring choices or something so awry that a whopping 80 per cent of us getting rid of the offending gift.

Commenting on the national Secret Santa crisis, Poundland’s very own Elf Behavin’ Badly and Christmas Senior Buyer Richard Brewin says, “Whilst most stick to chocolate, many would either buy their Secret Santa recipient a candle (60%) or socks (54%) – that’s a whole lot of safe but boring choice’s!”

“There are literally hundreds of fun and exciting things we can give colleagues, friends and family, something that puts a smile on their faces, and socks definitely isn’t one of them.

“Our elves have been working hard with Santa to deliver Christmas treats of amazing value and quality and this year we really have done the impossible by ensuring there really is something for anyone you might draw out of the hat – even the tricky Tech Geek!”

Whilst the Report revealed the majority of us expect to pay £10 or more (64%) for Secret Santa gifts, we don’t need to spend big to impress – creativity comes at a low-price tag at Poundland, with the majority of products priced at just £1, with additional even more amazing value products for just £2 and £5.

“Surprise the Office Diva with some of the hottest new makeup from our Make Up Gallery range, endorsed by the glamourous Ferne McCann.

“The report also found that Secret Santa classics like novelty mugs, are the top choice for men – so we’ve stocked our shelves with a range of cheeky mugs, guaranteed to make the lucky recipient chuckle as they sip their cuppa,” continued Richard Brewin.

Poundland’s chief gift giver also has the following suggestions for the top five trickiest personalities identified in the Report:
