Somerset based Wyke Farms partners with Sainsbury’s to lead on positive environmental impact

Wyke Farms, one of the UK’s largest independent cheese producers and milk processors, has announced a partnership with Sainsbury’s to supply Green gas for its stores.

Running for a year, Wyke Farms will supply a large proportion of the supermarket’s green gas, which makes up 6% of Sainsbury’s total gas use. This will save over 16 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per day or 24 thousand tonnes over the length of the supply partnership. This equates to over 5000 average cars driven for one year, based on average mileage.

‘We are delighted to be supplying Sainsbury with Green gas for their stores” said Richard Clothier, managing director and third generation family member at Wyke Farms. “Supplying customers with Gas as well as cheese, taking waste back in return, all forms part of the type of circular approach where everyone is a winner – especially the environment!”

Paul Crewe, Sainsbury’s head of sustainability, engineering & energy, said: “We are always looking for innovative ways to reduce our impact on the environment.  Our partnership with Wyke Farms shows the commitment we have to drive down our carbon footprint in what we are sure will be an efficient and sustainable way.”

Wyke Farms’ has a strong bond with the Somerset countryside and became one of the first national food brands to be self-sufficient in green energy in a long-term sustainability plan called ‘Wyke Farms 100% Green’. Its goal is to create a sustainable working farm, one, which sources all its electricity and gas from solar and biogas, generated from the farm and dairy waste, which is currently of no value. Wyke Farms will offer similar opportunities to other business serious about addressing their own environmental impact.

Wyke Farms is the only food company to make a list of Green promises that it measures itself against publicly available:

Wyke Farms has been producing its award-winning cheddar for over a century and has grown to become one of the largest family-owned cheese makers in Britain selling over 13,000 tonnes annually.

Wyke Farms has 150 years of family farming experience. Wyke Farms’ cheese and butter is made with the milk from their cows grazing the lush pastures of the Mendip Hills in the centre of the Cheddar making region in Somerset.

The Wyke Farms products are available nationwide and can be found in Asda, Co-op, Makro, Sainsbury’s Tesco and Waitrose.
