Spar claims it is well on track to be the first Austrian retailer to offer only sustainable fish by the end of this year, with the launch of its first Aquacultural Stewardship Council (ASC) certified fish.
Spar Pangasuis fillet is the first product in Austria to be recognised by the ASC, the equivalent of the famous Marine Stewardship Council for wild catch. A further nine sustainable fish species will be available in stores shortly.
Gerhard Drexel, CEO of Spar Austria, said: “Working with the WWF, we are committed to converting our entire fish range to sustainable sources. This means offering only fish from sustainable aquacultures, meeting stringent quality and environmental standards.
“The new ASC label guarantees that these standards are met and we are very proud to be the first retailer in Austria to introduce a Pangasius fillet with ASC label under our Spar quality brand.”
