Sporting events drive 4% rise in Facebook fans, reports ChannelAdvisor


Retailers added a total 788,797 Facebook fans in June 2012, boosted by sporting events such as Wimbledon and Euro 2012, according to ChannelAdvisor’s UK Facebook Commerce Index.

The growth represents an increase of 4% among the Top 25 retailers in the fan league table and shows Facebook brand engagement shows no sign of slowing, said ChannelAdvisor.

The digital marketplaces are doing particularly well, it said. Amazon and eBay were the only brands to shoot up the rankings in June’s Top 25 table.

Amazon had a very good month, jumping from 16th to 13th place, with 133,637 additional fans. As well as topping June’s Top Growers, Amazon was the number one for percentage growth as well, with a 31% increase in fans. This is especially good as Amazon wasn’t even in the Top 25 in January 2012, said researchers.

Amazon has now cleaned up its Facebook page and runs many more competitions, such as a Kindle prize draw and Aerosmith concert tickets, which seems to draw more and more Likes, said ChannelAdvisor.

Tesco, ranked seventh, also had a great month, and was the second fastest grower in June with 79,184 new fans – an increase of 10%.

The overall top 10 remains tellingly dominated by fashion retailers and, interestingly, there was 2% growth across the board for all the top six.

ChannelAdvisor expects a change in the top three in the coming months. New Look, for example, is now a mere 7,000 fans behind ASOS. It has closed the gap over the last few months, adding 35,000 fans compared to ASOS’ 31,000 in June alone.

However, significant growth is needed to outrun leader Topshop, which added 49,180 new fans this month, giving it a total fan count of 2.4m.
