World food giant Surya Foods has announced it has brought leading, authentic Mexican sauce brand KANKUN under its umbrella.
The world food specialists have gone into partnership with the award-winning KANKUN brand, which boasts a range of traditional Mexican products including, traditional hot and mild Mexican Chipotle Sauce, Mexican Habanero Sauce, Mexican Jalapeno Sauce and Mexican Marinade Sauce.
The funky brand, which features iconic Lucha Libre imagery on its packaging – a nod to the unique cultural phenomenon of masked wrestlers, hugely popular in Mexico since the 1930s – was launched in the UK in 2012 by Rolando Cardenas. Born in Mexico, and with UK citizenship, Cardenas wanted to bring an authentic taste of Mexico to the UK market, without harmful additives. The authentic sauces are the same as those enjoyed at traditional Mexican family gatherings from Cardenas childhood – made using a guarded family recipe.
Riding on the UK’s Mexican culinary wave, which has seen Mexican food catapult up the list of the nation’s favourite cuisines, the start-up has already achieved huge success making it into the food halls of the some of the UK’s leading retailers, including Selfridges, Fenwick, Wholefoods Market and The Conran Shop. Other official KANKUN suppliers include Mexican restaurant distributor MX Foods, speciality & fine food wholesale distributor Cotswold Fayre, online retailer Amazon and European Mexican groceries distributor mexgrocer.co.uk.
Nominated for a string of accolades since its launch, just last week, the popular brand scooped the ‘Mexican Company of the Year Award’ from the Mexican Chamber of Commerce at its annual gala dinner and awards celebrating Mexico’s contribution to UK culture.
The partnership marks Surya Food’s march into the Mexican category. The company, which is already the biggest supplier of world food lines into supermarket giants Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, intends to develop this side of its business with a view to becoming a leading supplier of Mexican products to the category. Surya are also setting up a new Mexican food division with Rolando at the helm.
Mexican food has experienced phenomenal sales growth in recent years, with some research suggesting it is now the UK’s favourite foreign cuisine. The British public spent over £168million on tortillas and Mexican meal kits in the past year.
Rolando Cardenas, founder of KANKUN, said: “We are delighted to be joining forces with Surya Foods to bring the KANKUN brand to the next level. As a small, family run team we have already achieved record sales among restaurants, speciality Mexican shops, delicatessens, independent stores and online retailers, however, it is our ambition to put authentic Mexican food on as many tables in the UK as possible and we believe joining forces with Surya Foods will elevate our brand to new heights. We are excited to be working alongside a company which has such a fantastic entrepreneurial ethos, which is also a hugely successful family run-operation.”
Harry Dulai, managing director of Surya Foods, said: “I loved this brand from the moment I came across it. The taste is 100 per cent authentic, the branding is fresh and fun and it is a fantastic range which makes adding a splash of authentic Mexican flavour to your food easy and accessible to all UK consumers.
“A great deal of what is on offer in the UK at present is ‘Anglo’-Mexican’ food – essentially anglicised Mexican food diluted to please UK palates, as Tex-Mex is to the US audience. However, UK consumers are becoming increasingly keen to eat the real deal and our business is all about authentic food, so this brand is a perfect fit for us.
“Rolando will stay at the helm of the business, with his profound passion for Mexican food and culture remaining a driving force and an important ingredient to the business’s success. This is a strategic alliance aimed at ensuring a fantastic, authentic product reaches its maximum potential.”
In addition to the established range, Surya intends to expand the KANKUN offering to include further Mexican lines. The company’s first priority, however, is to secure national listings for the brand with the UK’s leading supermarkets.
