The Perfume Shop celebrates its 30th Birthday with announcement of new CSR pledges

As it begins a year of celebrations for its 30th anniversary, The Perfume Shop has announced its commitment to a better future through a series of pledges and goals it promises to deliver by 2030. Dedicated to working in partnership with its brands and suppliers to help develop, launch and sell scent as sustainably as possible, the retailer has pledged:

A 90% reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions

The Perfume Shop aims to have reduced its emissions by 90% by the year 2030, compared to 2015, including Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned or controlled sources), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat and steam) and Scope 3 (all other indirect emissions such as business travel, waste disposal, purchased goods and services etc.). It’s already seen a reduction of 75% in 2019 vs 2015 through energy efficiency such as the roll-out of smart meters, LED lighting and a switch to 100% zero carbon electricity.

1 million trees to be planted by 2030

In 2020 The Perfume Shop launched a partnership with the charity Eden Reforestation Projects, whereby for every perfume bottle recycled in store a tree is planted in an area of the world suffering from deforestation, from Brazil and Haiti to Mozambique and Nepal. The charity works with local communities to restore forests on a massive scale, creating jobs, protecting ecosystems, and helping mitigate climate change. So far The Perfume Shop’s recycling has planted over 61,000 trees and created over 600 working days for local communities in need.

100,000 new bottles to be removed from circulation

By introducing more refillable bottles into stores as well as continuing to grow the bottle recycling scheme. The Perfume Shop’s customers recycled over 2,000 bottles in 2021 with the number climbing every year, while bestselling brands including Mugler, Lancôme, Armani and Dior have embraced refillable bottles.

As well as these key pledges, The Perfume Shop will;

·         Pledge to complete 3,000 hours of volunteering in 2022, giving each of its employees the opportunity of volunteering to contribute to their own local communities or take part in one of The Perfume Shop’s charitable causes, including Alzheimer’s Research UK, Look Good Feel Better, Marie Keating in Ireland and One Can, a food bank in High Wycombe near The Perfume Shop’s “Scent Quarters”

·         Remove all single-use plastics by 2025

·         Ensure all packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025

·         Raise £1m for its charity partners by 2026, including Alzheimer’s Research UK and the Marie Keating Foundation in Ireland

·         Reduce its energy intensity 30% by 2030 through actively monitoring and targeting high energy consumption throughout the business and through investment in energy efficient technology and equipment

Michelle Fellows, The Perfume Shop’s people and development director, says of the pledges: “We’re committed to doing everything we can to look after our people, our planet and our communities, particularly as we celebrate our 30th anniversary this year and look ahead to the future of The Perfume Shop. Our people are at the heart of the business and as such we’re pleased to have started 2022 making improvements to employee pay & benefits.”

“We’re also thrilled that our work with Eden Reforestation Projects is already creating vital work for communities in need as well as focusing on our charity efforts closer to home and we are excited to continue on this journey with our customers over the next few years.”
