The Company is part of Alexander Ross Holdings, a family-owned trading group, which also includes Montague Lloyd, one of the UK’s leading luxury hotel toiletries manufacturers, and Unico, Scotland’s leading provider of cleaning and hygiene solutions. The group’s history dates back to 1923 when a local Scottish man called Robert Ross founded the Unico business. For over 90 years, the business has passed down the Ross family line.
Two generations of the family now work in The Scottish Fine Soaps Company, including its third-generation founder, Derek Ross, and his son, another Robert Ross, managing director of the family business today.
Exporting to over 30 countries with real growth in key markets including Germany, Austria and China, this innovative and dynamic business has an established reputation for quality, both through its own-brand collections and products made under contract to top brands like Fortnum & Mason and Agent Provocateur.
Own-brand collections are the main focus with four new collections unveiled in under a year, as well as a strategic management appointment in the UK with French-born Stephanie Shaw on board to drive UK listings and sales.
The company also undertook a significant re-brand in its 40th year in 2014 to make the brand more contemporary and broaden appeal, with a proposition to blend seductive fragrances with active ingredients. The premium packaging has been designed to celebrate contemporary Scottish style with influences from the art, fashion and photography worlds amongst others. With more collections launching soon and beautiful limited edition Christmas gift sets and promotions, The Scottish Fine Soaps Company is well placed to capitalise on the peak selling period.
The best-selling Au Lait collection typifies the new design approach with a black and white miniature cow pattern based on an innovative houndstooth check – a Scottish fabric favourite of Coco Chanel and style editors today. With aloe vera, sweet almond oil and cocoa butter, the range also features signature items inspired by their natural ingredients, like the Milk Bath Powder with chamomile presented in an innovative milk churn for real gift appeal.
The iconic and invigorating Sea Kelp collection is infused with a clean and coastal fragrance and is rich in minerals and antioxidants, recreating a luxury at-home spa experience. With a formulation based on a home-grown Scottish wonder ingredient, Sea Kelp is packed full of nutrients to keep skin nourished and moisturised. The packaging design has been transformed with a swirling aqua paisley print, inspired by Scotland’s shores.
The creative twist for the new Larch & Lavender collection, which launched earlier this year, was to partner classic lavender with an intriguing and subtle woody larch fragrance. The other new collection is Pink Grapefruit & Argan Oil, which blends an uplifting citrus note with the active ingredient argan oil.
These signature ingredients are carried through the packaging, with the larch cone featuring as an illustration on Larch & Lavender and the Scottish watercolourists influencing the Pink Grapefruit & Argan Oil packaging.
