Top of the Shops: online health and beauty sales by volume w/e 3/9/12

Retail Times has teamed up with the online shopping site, mySupermarket, to showcase the top selling grocery and health & beauty lines at the leading online grocers and pharmacy chains in a weekly league table.

The new and exclusive Top of the Shops ranking will feature the top 20 selling health & beauty lines (by volume) at Asda, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose plus Boots and Superdrug through mySupermarket.


Eight Asda brands populate the retailer’s online health and beauty baskets this week. Baby/toddler lines are particularly popular, accounting for eight items in the top 20. Colgate and Johnson’s are the two most popular brands with two products apiece appearing in the basket. Prices are unchanged on a week ago.

Five Boots own labels feature in the retailer’s online health and beauty basket including two No 7 cosmetic products. Hair care products are popular with Boots shoppers and feature four times in the top 20. Make up features three times and perfume – Burberry for Women Eau de Parfum Spray – makes it into the top 20 online sellers. L’Oreal (three products) and Gillette and Lynx (two a piece) are three key brands in the line up.

Ocado’s online health & beauty basket is as eclectic as its grocery one with a smattering of   niche and specialist brands such as Pudgies Fragrance Free Baby Wipes, Galpharm Paracetamol Caplets, Fybogel Hi Fibre Orange and TePe Interdental Brushes. Again, baby products are popular but so too are oral/dental care lines, accounting for five lines in the top 20 online.

Sainsbury’s own label features seven times in the top 20 health & beauty lines bought in online baskets, with three products under the Basics label – Baby Wipes, Cotton Wool Pads and Nappy Bags.
Hair care brand, Tresemme, is a strong seller at Sainsbury’s this week with four listings in the top 20. Prices have remained the same as last week.

Superdrug’s online health and beauty basket is the most ‘adult’ oriented with no baby products featuring and more body enhancing products than its rivals. These include preparation products such as the Superdrug Purifying Cucumber Peel-Off Mask, Nivea Visage Daily Essentials Refreshing Toner and Biore Pore Perfect Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser. The basket also stands out for featuring more male health & beauty lines including Lynx Shampoo 2 in 1, L’Oreal Men Expert Anti-Irritation Caring Shave Gel Sensitive Skin and Calvin Kelin ckIN2U Him Eau de Toilette. Like Tesco, several lines in the top 20 are on promotion with prices of some items up to 56% cheaper and some double the amount last week.

Brands dominate Tesco’s health and beauty online basket this week with Tesco own label accounting for just one quarter of the top sellers. Baby products are a dominant category with Tesco Baby Wipes the top-selling own label and Huggies the top selling brand. Price changes are much more marked than in grocery with up to 50% reductions and increases of over 100% on prices compared with last week.

Just three own labels feature in Waitrose’s online basket and two under the Essential label. It’s an organic children’s basket too, featuring the Hipp Organic brand, Daniel Galvin Junior Organic Kids Hair Juice Wild & Crazy Detangle Shampoo, Peter Rabbit Organics Apple Puree and Ella’s Kitchen Organic Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli & Carrots.
