The nation’s top 100 apprenticeship employers have been revealed, with two companies representing the retail sector.

The prestigious Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, which is compiled annually by the National Apprenticeship Service in partnership with City & Guilds, recognises excellence in businesses that employ apprentices.

Retail sector companies featured included TAG Sports & Promotional Clothing and Topps Tiles, who were selected by a panel of judges from the employment and skills arena for their exceptional contribution to apprenticeships.

Laura Morris, learning and development manager at Topps Tiles, said: “We’re delighted to have been featured in the Top 100 Employers List and recognised for our work in helping young people, as well as supporting our own colleagues, to develop their careers by furthering their learning and development.

“Apprenticeships are growing in popularity and continuing to enable people to gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, while working and earning at the same time.

“There has never been a better time to become an apprentice and at Topps Tiles we’re proud to be able to empower people to get the crucial skills they need and become part of a motivated and highly qualified team.”

The list was announced by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg at the National Apprenticeship Awards, which took place during The Skills Show in Birmingham on 13 November. The Skills Show has City & Guilds as its lead premier sponsor, and is a unique celebration to inspire people with exciting opportunities in further education, skills and apprenticeships.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers have clearly demonstrated how apprenticeships have a major part to play in building great businesses. I would encourage more businesses across England to follow these shining examples and find out how apprenticeships can help them build a skilled, motivated and highly qualified workforce. For the Top 100 Apprentice Employers recognised in 2014, their great achievement clearly outlines why apprenticeships deliver the skills that young people and the economy need.”

CEO and director general of City & Guilds, Chris Jones, said: “It’s fantastic to celebrate the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers. They should be proud of their role in helping people gain the skills they need to be successful. After all, apprenticeships are a great way for people to earn as they learn, and they bring countless benefits to businesses.”
