Two Spar stores scoop Wiseman National Champions Awards

Spar Ponthir store manager Linda Robinson receives the award from Wiseman symbol group manager, Mike Allon.

Robert Wiseman Dairies has named Spar Goring and Spar Ponthir as two of its National Champions 2011 for excellent community retailing.

The Capper-owned stores beat thousands of stores from across the UK and were nominated by local customers.

A total of 147 stores achieved regional finalist status in the contest this year. They were then visited by a mystery shopper to identify the National Champions.

Sandy Wilkie, Wiseman’s sales and marketing director, said: “Congratulations to all our National Champions. The stores are fine examples of local convenience retailing at the heart of their community, who do so much for their local economy and neighbourhood. As it’s the consumer who nominates, these accolades go some way in showing how much each shop’s customers appreciate them and it’s also our chance to say thank you and reward them for their continual hard work.”

Independent judge for the awards, Stanley Morrice, said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to judge these awards – we’ve seen the UK’s best convenience stores and some great examples of local retailing. In the adverse weather conditions experienced recently it’s important supplies get into convenience stores as more consumers use local shops at these times and we see just how valuable they are to their communities. The stores are often a real life line that goes beyond providing the staples of bread and milk, but looking out for the welfare of vulnerable members of the community too.”
